Water and lava together can make different things. For example: stone, cobblestone, and obsidian. Obsidian can only be broken by using Creative Mode or using a diamond pickaxe. Here is how to make stone/cobblestone/obsidian using lava and water.
Stone: If lava flows on top of still or running water.
Cobblestone: If lava flows horizontally into water, Cobblestone is created. Also if water flows horizontally over lava.
Obsidian: If water flows into a lava pool/spring. If vertical falling water touches still lava on any side Obsidian is also created.
