Tips For Beginners: Smelt-able Items

Smelting, also known as melting, baking, cooking, burning and producing. Smeltable Items are things that can be put in a furnace and smelted. It is a very important part of the game. For example, if you mine an iron ore, you must smelt it to obtain and iron ingot. The iron ingot allows you to craft many items essential to survival such as iron armor, and a iron pickaxe. A furnace is made by gathering cobblestone and placing it in all the squares of the crafting table except for the one in the center.  In order to smelt something, fuel is needed.

The fuel that is fairly easy to obtain and use is coal. They are found in huge numbers often in caves and abandoned mineshafts. Any wooden item can be used as fuel. All possible things smeltable in Minecraft (Without mods) are food items,(pork chops, beef, etc...) iron ores, and many other items. To use a furnace, simply insert the fuel source into the bottom square of the input section, and insert the item you want to smelt on top. It takes a few seconds to smelt each object. You can always exit the furnace and gather the fuel and smelted items later. You can also take objects out as the furnace is still working.
